Londonderry Tournament

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (1) vs. Salem (3)

This was a tough one for the Stampede. Again missing a couple players due to earlier commitments. The Stampede controlled most of the game with good ball control. A minor early mistake led to a Salem goal and the girls began to get a little down on themselves.

Just before the halftime whistle Salem got a second goal in what appeared to be an offsides that was not called. Unlucky for the Stampede.

In the second half, Salem picked up a third goal...and an absolute beauty - a header of a corner that was directed downward to the far post, leaving Melissa no chance at all.

Later in the half the Stampede just cut loose. Perhaps it was the halftime oranges, who knows, but they kicked it into high gear and just took it to Salem. Hillary had been moved up front into some very unfamiliar territory. As she and a couple other girls moved forward, Alex drew the keep well out to the right side and send the ball in. Someone (not sure who) took a shot and a Salem defender brilliantly jumped in front of it, but in the process knocked the ball down with her hand. Hillary was there for the rebound and found the back of the net.

The referee had blown the whistle just as Hillary was shooting so the shot didn't count, but Kaylie (sp?) took the resulting penalty kick and converted wonderfully.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (0) vs. Derry (0)

The game reporter was absent from this game, but the coach had this to say...

I was THRILLED. Whistle to whistle...outstanding effort from every player, going after every ball, support ALL OVER THE FIELD, smart play in each direction, great runs, great chances taken. The trap was clicking, perhaps better than ever, much to the consternation of our adversaries and their British helper...it became quite the focus of conversation over there...and respectfully done. Just flat out nice work, and the coaches of the teams coming in for the next game shared some very positive comments with me. Yes..the girls all made "the choice" in this game, regardless of where they were asked to play on the field. This was truly one of the better "team" performances that any of my teams have put out there.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (9) vs. PYSL (0)

The game reporter was absent from this game, but the coach had this to say...

Well...we've been on the opposite side of a few of these things over the past 2 or 3 years. The Stampede deserved one of these from the winning side! We clearly enjoyed the experience of dominating a game, breaking out a little to do some different things, playing in different positions with total abandon towards goal! It was fun stuff for the girls, and I enjoyed watching them enjoy it! I will admit, it's better to be on "this" side of those, than the "other."

I saw so many wonderful things from so many of the girls this weekend. They all had fine, fine moments. We had good defense, good moves, good shots...good everything. Some girls had their best soccer performances EVER, and some had huge success doing new things. They ALL pulled for each other, and hustled to be there FOR EACH OTHER...which is something that I ask for, but don't get nearly enough, and have NEVER gotten like this. I've had some great individual effort from all players on a field in past seasons, but this was AS A TEAM.

While we are still hunting for that trophy, we did acheive my stated personal goal this weekend.....we "put good, thoughtful, creative soccer on the field." Sure...we could've played the entire Salem game the way we started and finished it. We could've found the net against Dery for the win, in that otherwise darn near perfect perfomance...no flaw...but we just didn't find it. However, the lesson of the first game, and the performance in the second, made this tourney a complete success ( and the third game could be considered the reward!) We can build nicely on these successes. I have told the girls to remember, and concentrate on the Dery game. It was truly extraordinary, and when we play like that...we can play with anyone...and goals and wins will result most of the time.

Regular Season

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (3) vs. CUSC (1)

The Stampede showed their stuff today and played a very good game. With rotating shifts of 4, the girls stayed rested and played well.

Melissa, Kaleigh and Liz were out today so Susan drew goalkeeping duty and played a solid game, including one lightening quick hand save on a close range shot.

Bridget gets credit for the first goal, taking a shot from within the box that was mishandled by the (otherwise excellent) Cheshire keeper. The Stampede ruled the first half, getting off numerous shots, but none found the back of the net untl the second half.

In the second half, Hillary picked up a nice goal after a shot from the right was deflected out to the left by the Cheshire keeper and into Hillary's path. She one-touched it with her left foot and officially opened her scoring account for the season. The assists came from Amanda and Ashley.

Cheshire counted with what was probably an offsides goal, sending a point balnk shot past a helpless Susan in net. The Assistant Referee did admit after the game the player was probably offsides, but these things happen and it didn't alter the outcome of the game.

Later in the half Amanda fed a very nice through ball to Ashley who won a foot race with the keeper to touch the ball (with her knee) past the keeper and into the net (just before colliding with the keeper) to put the Stampede up 3-1.

Emily, Tori, Kate and Rebecca deserve special note for their outstanding hustle and play in this game.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (1) vs. (4)

A tough loss for the Stampede. Reminiscent of the Londonderry Tournament game, the Stampede controlled the ball for much of the game, but could not get off enough shots.

The offsides trap worked well today, but Salem started things off with what, by all accounts, appeared to be an offsides goal. They added a second one to go up 0-2.

In the second half, a foul in the box, resulting in a Stampede yellow card, led to a penalty kick for Salem, but it was sent over the crossbar. Later Salem picked up a third goal, definitely onside.

The Stampede picked up their first goal as someone (Rebecca or Kaleigh perhaps) took a shot and Hillary was there to send the rebound into the back of the net.

Salem did pick up another (likely offsides) goal later in the half and the Stampede was unable to come back.

Lara, Katie and Susan had notable games today with excellent effort.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (6) vs. Louden (0)

Both the Stampede and Louden were seriously shorthanded today with Louden playing with 10 players for much of the game and the Stampede starting with 2 subs and getting down to no subs for the second half.

The Stampede started strong with a few goo early shots from Susan and Amanda, but it was Alex, parked strategically near the far post, who put the Stampede on the board first with a nice one touch goal off a cross from Amanda.

Ashley picked up the second goal with a near post one touch shot off an excellent pass from Susan.

Amanda picked up the 3rd and 4th goals, at least the first one unassisted, after winning battles in the box.

In the second half, the Stampede continued their domination on the field. Melissa had to make only 1 save today after a bad touch let a Louden player in on a breakaway. A nice diving save kept her with a clean sheet for the game.

The Stampede continued the shooting barrage and were it not for the Louden keeper doing a decent job stopping most of the shots, the score would have been much more lopsided.

Alex picked up the 5th goal (and her second of the game) on a nice right side shot to the far post and Bridget picked up her first of the season when she intercepted a defensive clearance about 30 yards out and let a shot fly long, over the keepers head and into the back of the net, setting the final score at 6-0.

The Stampede skillfully and tactfully played posession ball for much of the second half, keeping the ball in the Louden end for all but a minute or two. Emily, Hillary, Lara, Elisabeth and Kate did excellent passing work in midfield and up front to retain most of the posession.

And, as we've come to expect, Tori let absolutely nothing by her center defense position and had yet another excellent game.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (2) vs. Salem (0)

A chance to avenge their two previous losses to Salem, neither of which the Stampede should have lost, being the better team each time, but not being able to convert. This was also the first time this season where all the Stampede girls were present at the game so we had a full roster and plentiful subs for the day. Katie C, Katie D, and Susan were all back from the disabled list today.

Today the girls played what Coach Peter likes to call "total soccer" as they moved well, passed well and worked with each other very well. Melissa had a good day in net, making a few good saves, but the Stampede defense of Amy, Tori and Katie C generally kept the ball out of the 18 yard box.

The first goal came off a throw in from Susan and Rebecca expertly fed to Amanda who then sent the ball past the Salem keeper to the far post and into the back of the net.

Later int he half, Bridget took a corner kick. The ball was deflected back and she drilled it in...but just over the net. It was good work by Bridget to be on her toes and follow up the deflected corner kick.

In the second half the Stampede continued to dominate with most of the posession and nice passing. good shots came from Alex and Ashley. Later in the half Bridget sent a nice through ball to Ashley, splitting two Salem defenders and Ashley's low, hard shot got through the Salem keeper to make the final score 2-0.

Alex had an outstanding game today, with good hostle to the ball, nice passing and good attacking up front. Tori and Amy were solid as usual.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (5) vs. Louden (1)

The girls started a little slow, perhaps over-confident from the previous 6-0 win over Louden and let in an early and easy goal. They picked up the pace after that and played the type of soccer they know they can play.

Rebecca picked up the first goal not long after Louden's, taking a nice long pass from Susan on the left side and burying it in the far corner of the Louden net.

Hillary, our converted defender, picked up the next goal (her 3rd on the season) on a feed sent in by Elisabeth. Rebecca's chances continued at center forward and she came close a couple times before Susan against set her up for a nice finish, putting the Stampede up 3-1.

In the second half the Stampede kept up the pressure, allowing Louden only minimal time in their end of the field and keeping Melissa idle most of the day in net.

Rebecca notched her first hat trick of the season, converting a rebound for an unassisted goal.

They the shooting gallery started. Susan and Amanda each had 4 or 5 shots, either a hair too high, a hair too wide or stopped by the Louden keeper. All nicely taken shots, most from the top of the 18 yard box. Amanda finally managed to push one past the Louden keeper to set the final score at 5-1.

Bari was again outstanding today with Lara (a few beautifully lofted balls up front for Rebecca) and Susan also playing very well.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (0) vs. Westboro (1)

While it was a loss on paper, it was a stunning display by the Stampede...some of the best soccer they've played this year. Westboro was a solid team, likely two divisions above the Stampede and they were the only team to ever consistently work the offsides trap against the girls. The Stampede defense (Amy, Tory and Katie C along with Katie D) still out-trapped Westboro to the (very vocal) displeasure of the Westboro coach. He was heard once saying to his girls "the whole team was offside!!". Best of all was that most of the better traps the girls were done without Coach Peter hollering "Get up!".

The battle of offside traps was definitely won by the Stampede and Rebecca, Amanda, Hillary and Alex made good inroads through the Westboro defense, but were unable to send in any solid shots. The Stampede forwards did an outstanding job of staying onside and getting the ball up the field.

The Stampede had most of the posession and the few forays Westboro had into the Stampede end of the field were usually fluke deflections that sent the ball behind the Stampede defense, but Amy, Tory and Katie C consistently cleaned up well.

In the first half, Rebecca and Elisabeth showed an outstanding display of give-and-go one touch passing as they worked their way up the right with at least 2 (if not 3) passes each back and forth.

The one goal of the game came on a long ball from Westboro that let a Westboro forward in for a breakaway. The resulting shot was just beyond the fingers of a desperately reaching Melissa in net.

Overall, an excellent game for the girls against good competetion.

The game reporter missed this one as it was his wife's birthday.

Word is that Amanda shook up the Classics with a 1st minute goal from well outsite the 18-yard box.

Unfortunately, Melissa was injured on a late goal and will be missing a couple weeks.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (0) vs. Simsbury (3)

The score belies what an overall excellent game this was. The Stampede held a stronger Simsbury scoreless until the final 10 minutes. Much like the Westboro game, the opposing coach was pulling his hair out over how well Katie C, Amy and Tory were trapping his players offsides over and over again. Coach Peter was most impressed with how well the girls worked the trap on their own.

Susan took over goalkeeping duties for the injured Melissa who did attend the game, looking a little sad with her left arm in a sling.

Susan came up with a big game, stopping a couple breakaway attempts.

The first Simsbury goal came with about 10 minutes left in the game and was well played by Simsbury. The Stampede were very tired at this point. Susan took a shot to the knee on the goal and was replaced by Tory who put in 10 excellent minutes in net.

With the girls a little down after the first goal, Simsbury really turned it on and managed to pick up 2 late goals, one of which Tory actually did an outstanding job of stopping, but a Simsbury player was there for the rebound.

In the end, it was 3 losses in the tournament, but losses to 3 premier teams and the Stampede held their own in every game and played very well.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (4) vs. Hooksett (1)

Another stellar performance from the girls and more very impressive work on the offsides trap work from Amy, Tory and Bridget. Susan again took over net-minding duties as Melissa remained on the injured list.

The Stampede got on the board early after a couple good attempts. Amanda crossed the ball in frmo the right and Rebecca ripped off a shot and the keeper managed to block it, but Rebecca followed it and slotted in the first goal.

Rebecca and Amanda teamed up for the second goal as well when Rebecca centered a quick 1-touch pass in to Amanda who nicely curved the ball into the left side of the net from the top of the 18.

The Stampede gave one up on an overall smart play when they took advantage of the "no offsides on a throw-in" rule, quickly got the ball behind the defense and lifted one over Susan from the left side.

The Stampede girls weren't done. They continued to control the ball and continued to show some first rate passing as well. Rebecca sent in a nice pass to Amanda and bolted toward the net so Amanda completed the give-and-go back to Rebecca who sent her shot into the back of the net for her second of the game, putting the Stampede up 3-1.

In the second half the girls continued the excellent offsides trap work and the midfield of Lara, Katie, Kate and Kaleigh doing first rate work controlling the ball and pushing it up to the forwards.

One memorable play, even though it didn't result in the hoped-for goal came when the ball came into Susan and Rebecca immediately realized her chance. Just on the Stampede end of the field, she began waving her arm and sprinting. Susan saw her and launched a punt over everyone, leading Rebecca nicely. Rebecca move in, but her shot was stopped by the Hooksett keeper.

The final goal of the match was almost a repeat of the third goal. Rebecca passed to Amanda who one-touched the ball back to Rebecca whose shot made it past the keeper and put the Stampede up 4-1.

Honorable mention go to Bridget for another outstanding game at right back in place of an absent Katie C, Susan for another strong performance in net covering for Melissa and Bari, Elisabeth and Katie D for their outstanding hustle all day long.

Game Summary for

NGSA Stampede (2) vs. Salem (3)

The Stampede met Salem in the GSYSL playoffs and it was eveyr bit as close as game as expected between the two best teams in the division.

It was a midfield game through most of the half with both defenses holding strong and not letting much though. The Stampede broke down the wall first after a flurry near the top of the 6-yard box as Bari drilled in her first goal of the year.

Unfortunately, the most dangerous time for a team is right after they've scored and Salem took advantage, picking up their first goal about 1 minute later.

The Stampede offsides trap worked brilliantly again, catching Salem many times, impressing the referees and annoying the opposing parents.

Late in the second half, a Salem handball in the box led to a Stampede penalty. Susan took the lead and called for the kick which she nicely buried into the lower left corner to put the Stampede back up 2-1.

Late the half Salem picked up the tying goal on a breakaway, leading us into overtime.

The Stampede did had a few chances in the game, notably, a wonderful well placed shot from Amanda, which the Salem goalkeeper dove to save. Cant' take anything away from the Salem keeper, it was an excellent save.

Salem managed to get the golden goal during overtime which gave the Stampede 2nd place in the GSYSL division for the season. It was an outstanding season for the Stampede, one they should be proud of.
