Brian's Kenpo Page - Opposites and Reverses
Opposites and Reverses
This page contains information related to opposites and reverses, how this
concept fits into Kenpo techniques, forms and motion in general. This is
my Black Belt Assignment from my instructor.
Opposites & Reverses are (or so
I'm told - I'm now trying to determine this) everywhere in Kenpo. We see them
in techniques as well as forms. My objective is to go through each technique
and each form, looking for opposites and reverses.
Some of this information is duplicated on my notes page.
Techniques opposites
The first technique on each line is the opposite of the next
technique.
Checking The Storm & Buckling Branch
Checking the Storm is a right hand attack with us
defending from inside and high.
Buckling Branch is a left leg attack (opposite side and
opposite weapon) with us defending from outside and low.
Glancing Spear & Gripping Talon
In Glancing Spear, we have a left wrist grab, we move
up and back and take attacker down backwards.
In Gripping Talon, we have a right wrist grab, we move
down and in and take attacker down forward.
Crossing Talons & Crossed Twigs
Opposite sides of the Outward Elbow, Overhead Downward
Elbow and Knee strike. In addition, the direction we're
facing in relation to the attacker is opposite.
Raining Claw & Darting Mace
In Raining Claw, we step
back, Inward Block, opposite hand strike and remain inside
the attacker.
In Darting Mace, we step in,
Inward Block (opposite hand), opposite hand strike and keep
pretty much outside the attacker.
Reverses in techniques
The first technique on each line is the opposite of the next
technique.
Opposites in forms
Here are some form pieces that are opposites. They are very small parts of
forms.
The left outward block in Destructive Twins at the start of short 3 is
paired with the right outward block in Twirling Wings in short 3
