Stances

The Stance Sets are used to drill in the basics of good solid stances and smooth transitions between them. Stances are one of the cornerstone of our movements in Kenpo.

Attention Stance Toes and heels together, hands at sides. Disciplinary stance
Natural Stance Feet shoulder width apart, arms relaxed at side. Disciplinary stance
Rest Stance Feet shoulder width apart, hands clasped behind back Disciplinary stance
Horse Stance Feet outside shoulder width, knees bent, hands at side bent, fists in at waist, knees out over ankles. Disciplinary stance
Only front weapons available (side horse)
Center line open
A 50-50 weight ratio
Meditating Stance Horse stance, arms chest level, elbows bent, left hand over right fist. Disciplinary stance
Neutral Bow Natural stance, drop leg back, feet at 45 degrees, front toe parallel to rear heel, front arm out at 90 degrees in front of face, rear arm in close covering midsection. Center line partially open

Using forward weapon
Forward Bow From a Neutral Bow, turn rear foot to face front, rear foot flat, rear leg straight, front knee bent. Should not be ale to see front toes. Center line partially open

Using rear weapon
Reverse Bow Forward Bow, turn head to look backwards. Transitionary stance
90 Degree Cat Start with the heel of one foot up against the instep of your other foot (your feet are at a 90 degree angle to each other). Slide the heel foot forward so the heel is where the toes were. Move up onto the ball of that foot. Center line partially open
Has an 90-10 weight ratio
45 degree Cat start with your heels together, toes apart at a 45 degree angle. Move the heel of one foot forward so the heel is where the toes of that foot were. Move up onto the ball of that foot. Center line partially open

Front Twist From a Neutral Bow, move your rear leg forward in front of your front leg and towards the corner so that the inside of your foot is facing the corner. Up on the ball of your other foot, keep knees bent. Sets up torque

Transitionary stance
Rear Twist From a Neutral Bow, move your rear leg forward behind of your front leg and towards the corner so that the inside of your foot is facing the corner. Up on the ball of your other foot, keep knees bent. Sets up torque

Transitionary stance
Rotating Twist From a Neutral Bow, turn your forward foot outward (rotating on the ball of the foot) so that your toes point to the side. At the same time, bend your rear knee and sink your body so that your rear knee is a couple inches off the ground. Your front foot is flat on the floor and you are on the ball of your rear foot. High Wide Kneel From neutral Bow, bend rear knee and stay up on ball of rear foot, rear knee at 45 degrees, foot pointing outward. Used to accentuate Marriage of Gravity
Close Kneel From Forward Bow, bend rear knee and stay up on ball of rear foot, rear knee and foot facing forward. Covers center line
Used for breaking or checking knee
Crane Natural stance, move one leg up and place bottom of foot on the inside of the other knee. Used to get travel for kick to knee
